On a summer night at Dos Equis Pavilion during a rare August cool front the Smashing Pumpkins rolled
into town bringing with them Rival Sons and Interpol. I wasn’t too familiar with the opening bands so
googled them both before the show so I would know what to expect. To say my expectations were
exceeded would be an understatement.
Rival Sons has a classic rock / bluesy sound that I loved from the first song. Although they were forming in 2009 in California you can really hear the Nashville influence! Lead singer Jay Buchanan is a wonderful mix of Jim Morrison and Micheal Hutchins of INXS. Lead guitarist Scot Holiday was amazing playing several guitars at once. I have become a fan!
Next up Interpol that has a crazy fanbase that brought so much energy to the show! Interpol an
alternative rock band that was very upbeat and energetic! Of all their songs played that night I loved Say
Hello to the Angels!
Smashing Pumpkins took the stage after dark opening with an incredible light show and The Everlasng
Gaze! The crowd went wild! Billy Corgan’s voice was just as fresh and clear as the 80s. He joked that
everyone calls them a 90s band while they are really an 80s band. Although I have listened to the
Smashing Pumpkins for years, since the 80s, I had never had the opportunity to see them live.
The showwas more rock and less alternative than I antcipated, it was so great! Everyone was dancing and singing
the songs of a generation! The trifecta of perfection was Ava Adore, Tonight Tonight, and followed by
Bullet with Buterfly Wings!! Needless to say I was a litle horse after singing the night way with Billy
Corgan and Smashing Pumpkins.
